Master Condition List: Complete VA Ratings Guide
The VA rates hundreds of conditions that veterans may have developed during or aggravated by military service. This comprehensive guide organizes all ratable conditions by body system to help you find your condition and understand how it's rated.
How VA Conditions Are Rated
The VA uses a rating schedule (38 CFR Part 4) to assign disability ratings from 0% to 100% based on the severity and impact of your condition. Most ratings fall in 10% increments (10%, 20%, 30%, etc.), though some conditions have unique rating criteria.
Common Rating Percentages:
- 0%: Condition diagnosed but not severe enough for compensation (establishes service connection)
- 10%: Mild symptoms with minimal functional loss
- 20%: Moderate symptoms with some functional impact
- 30%: Moderate to significant functional loss
- 40%: Substantial functional loss
- 50%: Significant functional loss affecting daily activities
- 60%: Major functional loss requiring accommodation
- 70%: Severe functional loss, employment affected
- 80%: Very severe functional loss
- 90%: Almost complete loss of function
- 100%: Total disability, unable to work

How to Find Your Condition
VA Rating Schedule Lookup
The complete rating schedule is found in 38 CFR Part 4 (Code of Federal Regulations). This official document contains:
- Diagnostic codes for every ratable condition
- Rating criteria and percentages (10%, 20%, 30%, etc.)
- Special notes for each condition
- Links: VA Rating Schedule Online or 38 CFR Part 4
Search Tips
-
Use Exact Medical Terms: Search for your clinical diagnosis (not casual names)
- "Lumbar Spondylosis" not "bad back"
- "Generalized Anxiety Disorder" not "worry"
- "Traumatic Brain Injury" not "head injury"
-
Search by Body System: If unsure of exact diagnosis, browse the system section above
-
Check Multiple Names: Conditions have medical names, common names, and abbreviations
- Osteoarthritis = Arthritis = OA
- Posttraumatic Stress Disorder = PTSD
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease = GERD
-
Look for Symptom Keywords: Search what you experience
- Hearing loss → Tinnitus, Sensorineural Hearing Loss
- Back pain → Lumbar Strain, Sciatica, Disc Herniation
- Depression → Major Depressive Disorder, Adjustment Disorder
-
Check Presumptive Conditions: If you served in specific eras/locations, you may qualify automatically
- Vietnam (Agent Orange)
- Iraq/Afghanistan (Burn Pit)
- Gulf War 1990-1991
- Nuclear testing sites
- Camp Lejeune
-
Use VA Resources:
- VA Disability Benefits Questionnaires (DBQs) - condition-specific forms
- VA Ratable Conditions
- Call Veterans Benefits Hotline: 1-800-827-1000
Common Mistakes
Don't:
- Assume your condition isn't ratable
- Wait to file until 100% sure
- Assume you need perfect medical records
- File for only your most severe condition (can claim multiple)
- Ignore presumptive conditions you qualify for
- Miss Appeals deadlines (1 year for NOD)
Do:
- File even with limited evidence (VA will develop claim)
- Include ALL service-connected conditions
- File for presumptive conditions if you served during exposed era
- Get Statement in Support (VA Form 21-0781 for PTSD, similar for others)
- Appeal if rated lower than expected (many wins on appeal)
Understanding Your Rating Decision
When you receive a rating decision, you'll see:
Example Breakdown:
Condition: Lumbar Spondylosis
Evaluation: 30%
Effective Date: 01/15/2022
Status: Service-Connected
Your Combined Rating adds all conditions using VA math (not simple addition):
- First condition: 30%
- Second condition: 20% → combined becomes 50%
- Third condition: 10% → combined becomes 55%
Use the VA Rating Calculator to see how multiple ratings combine.
