VA Wants to Shrink Form 21-526EZ: What Still Matters

On July 15, 2026, VA announced proposals to cut application paperwork for disability compensation and for certain survivor benefits.
For veterans, the headline is Form 21-526EZ:

VA also proposed shortening Form 21-534EZ (DIC / survivors pension / accrued benefits) from about 20 pages to 7.

Status: This is a proposal under public comment / information-collection review. Do not assume the 5-page form is already required online until VA publishes it for use.
What gets easier
- Less redundant biographical and instruction text
- Faster first-pass form completion for many applicants
- Lower intimidation barrier for first-time filers and survivors
What does not get easier (the real work)
A shorter application does not shorten:
- Gathering medical evidence
- Proving service connection (unless a presumptive applies)
- Describing functional impairment for rating purposes
- Preparing for a C&P exam
- Organizing private / community-care records
- Choosing increase vs supplemental vs new claim strategy
In other words: forms shrink; evidence still decides outcomes.
How to prepare while the form is still long
- Keep using the current 21-526EZ path on VA.gov or through accredited help until the new form is live.
- Build a condition list with diagnosis, onset, and evidence links before you open the form.
- Draft personal / buddy statement content offline so the form is data entry, not discovery.
- Label uploads by condition and date so faster processing does not skip critical pages.
